Ben joined the Gerwick lab as a postdoc in mid-2015 after graduating with his Ph.D. in Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacognosy (natural product sciences) from The Ohio State University. There Ben had worked with Professor A. Douglas Kinghorn on the discovery and chemical investigation of bioactive natural products from medicinal plants. Ben’s goal now is to utilize advanced analytical chemistry techniques, such as mass spectrometric networking and modern nuclear magnetic resonance experiments, to rapidly identify new or under-studied chemical entities produced by cyanobacteria that could be useful in the future for the treatment of cancer. He hopes to collaborate with others to explore how genomic information and biotechnological tools can contribute to the development of natural product drug discovery.
